Simkhas Toyre (a.k.a. Simchat Torah) is the Jewish holiday that marks the completion and restart of the year-long cycle of Torah readings. It’s a synagogue event that involves singing and dancing and (IMHO) the idolatrous worship of the Word.
Nu, let’s get idolatrous together! ALTE: Getting Old Together is hosting a Zoom gathering at 7 p.m. on Monday, October 17th, at which we’d like participants to speak briefly about Words that, to you, constitute Torah. (The word, “torah,” means “teaching,” or “guidance.”)
I, for example, am a follower of the Lennonzen:
“Why in the world are we here? Surely not to live in pain and fear! Why in the world are you there, when you’re everywhere! Come and get your share!” —Instant Karma
If you’d like to join our Zoom, please write to altetogether@gmail.com and you’ll be sent the link.
In the meantime, we’re seeking good music, both original songs and covers, that speaks to the theme of “Getting Old Together.” Issue #12 of ALTE will consist of an online group of these songs that you’ll be able to hear on your phone, computer, pad, etc. Please record yourself, however you can, and send an mp3 or mp4 file to lawrencebush@earthlink.net before the end of October. Not an instrumentalist? Vocals are just fine! Not a vocalist? Send an instrumental!
Hoping that the new year brings you love — in many forms. For as the Lennonzen declares:
“Love is all you need.”
Is it true? If you take food, shelter, and a stable climate for granted, YES!
