Only one slightly sour note in this otherwise very thoughtful piece, Larry: "Catholic Charities"? Surely there's another group you could volunteer with that doesn't support marches to end legal abortions, not to mention birth control! Sure, I've worked for Catholic churches, but they've paid me for my musical services, even though it sometimes made me sick to hear them praying "for all life, from conception to natural death" & invoking the Holocaust to support their anti-feminism. When folks in West Berlin questioned my concertizing in East Berlin: "You worked with Communists?" I replied, "Well, I've worked with Catholics." But not fascists, and if I have a choice, not Anti-Choicers either.
Watched a video last night on Amazon about thousands of Jewish immigrants coming to Shanghai. They survived, it seemed, only by support from outside agencies and remained almost totally separate from the Chinese. Though I agree that our Gov't should surely be doing more to support the Afghan refugees, at least they will be invited by some to benefit from and get to know the local community.
