You don't need permission to bring something when you're invited to dinner. In fact it's expected. I think there must be more to the story with Lila. My guess is that she specifically asked her mother NOT to bring the Coffee cake but she brought it anyway.
Your hunch could very well be true. My memory/perspective is that of a kid. but I do have a clear sense that the cake was in her large purse, under the table and was not presented in the kitchen to her daughter who could have chosen or not chosen to serve it. Ah, the complications of family and the complications of memory.

My own grandmother, in response to a question about amounts in a recipe would simply say: "Enough so it tastes good."
Hence, it has always been a lot of effort to get anywhere near the right flavor. ;-)
