Mother’s Day is so complicated for so many of us. A long time ago a friend of mine, in her twenties, lost her husband very suddenly. Every day for a year after he died she went to a psychiatrist. I asked if this process helped her with her husband’s loss.
The heritage of Mother's Day includes Julia Ward Howe's effort to launch it as an anti-war holiday in 1870. Howe was a social reformer who authored "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." Her holiday was observed around the country for about three decades until war hysteria overtook it at the beginning of World War I.
I don't see why it's any more "fake" a holiday than Christmas or Passover. The latter two are based on entirely mythical stories, while Mother's Day at least honors an experience that many, many women find to be central to their lives.
