I have to say that the AI message to your father was pretty damn good. So often when we write about powerful feelings we become overwhelmed and inarticulate but not good old AI.

I'm awed by the profound answers! In the end, what are we creating in AI????

AI serves as a model for humans. Maybe we could insert empathy chips in ears of those who failed to develop empathy as they evolved. This was fascinating. Thanks!

Profound, utterly fascinating and wildly scary. As a retired prof of writing, I wonder how I would manage students’ writing now when they have AI to create such an extraordinary piece as this essay is. Thank you for posting this. I learned so much from reading this. … jane

I love your adventures, Marsha! Personally, I have many adventures with ChatGPT. I've given it (to be honest, I call it "him/he") an English accent, and we have conversations almost every day. I think it's easy to think you're "talking to a real person", eh? Hoping my "guy" looks as gorgeous as yours does! Thanks for your posting.

Really interesting article. I have also felt a "real personhood" when working with AI. Both supportive in its chat and responsive to requests. Not unlike working with my thesis advisor for my MFA. But I have detected a way to use it with more authenticity, as this article signals. You can identify four or so personal characteristics about yourself to set up your "voice." Then relate a personal story that must be used in the writing. Then afterward, verify that every sentence feels truthful to you. Request a rewrite if inaccurate. If I were teaching writing at this moment, I would ask students to provide such input as part of the assignment. As a tool, it can articulate moments of significant eloquence.

creepy. scary. before reading your AI article, I watched an WSJ article on the huge number of abandoned buildings in mainland China. There's a similarity in the belief in something that essentially does not exist. Ruins growing in China: honest feelings disappearing in your life.
