Thanks Esther. Lovely reflections. The paradox in Hamby's poem is between the younger self she is addressing and the less young younger self who is writing the poem. Those of us who've attained the status of "alte" recognise the fluidity of younger/older as we pass through life. We may not be "forever young" but there is only one moment in which we are not younger, a moment yet to come.
Wow and thank you! and to follow it with Jimmy Durante (face close up!) singing the perfect song to sum it all up! Tears in my eyes, gratitude to be alive right here and now in my heart, perfect June 1 summer day, sun pouring down over all the green leaves and flower blossoms, and nothing hurts body or spirit, right this moment. Whoooo!
Wonderful thoughts. Wonderful poem. Once, in my mid-eighties, I answered the question, "What would you tell your twenty-year-old self?" I wrote, "Laugh more."
Wear white!
So beautiful. Every word.
In addition, you got me
re-hooked
On Jimmy Durante!

In these later years, despite what was projected, there's a complex anger and frustration that erupts when I think of my youth.
Dreams were rare, survival til college and freedom was #1.
But that was nobody’s business or concern.
Ah, see how this prompt puts me in a dither? Not a 10 minute write ✍️ 😀 !
