I'm old now, but can remember my parents' fears about how the U.S. govvernment would react if
they knew that my parents were Socialists. In the 1950s, when I was a teen, I belonged to a Socialist/zionist youth movement, and we also worried.
I would certainly join any demonstration or march (which I did throughout the 60s and 70s). But I no longer live in the USA and am so distressed to know what a mess my once-beloved homeland is in!
My increasingly wobbly self tells me I wouldn't be able to stand up to a demonstration event. However, my five-year-old half-black Jewish grandson Graham was out there locally, yelling and carrying posters. My 17-year old grandson Shai is off today via bus for a demonstration in Philadelphia. I don't think my late wife Betsy is conscious of the going on today, but if I'm wrong and she is looking at us from somewhere, she is smiling at her two activist grandsons.
Yes! I am barely 12 weeks out of spine surgery but I'll be at a No Kings rally in Long Island with my walker, carrying a sign that says "DEMOCRACY NOT FASCISM" - I've also been going out every Thursday from 7-7:30pm to shine the light and stand up for what I believe in, right here in my town. It's happening all over America - I think there's one in Accord, too. tinyurl.com/thursdaylight
Thanks for the memories - from one of the few other people who remembers (some of) the history of Jewish Currents.
See you tomorrow! Unless the crowd is so big we can’t find each other, which would be nice.
May we all find our ways to be heard.
Thanks for writing about your 8 year old self.
